Loads of entertainment will pack the port with an eclectic taste of music that includes rock, jazz, Sea Shanty, Latin, Mexican, Big Band, Country and dance. Basically if it’s a style of music, it’ll be there. And if a slew of great music wasn’t enough, a few Tall Ship’s sails will be creatively used as gigantic movie screens showing entertaining flicks throughout the duration of the festival.

Education and children’s activities will also be a large part of the Tall Ships® L.A. Festival. Cannon demonstrations, authentic privateer encampment, real sword fighting with live steel, knot tying, weapon demonstrations and sail training with real tall ship rigging round out the impressive festival’s learning opportunities. Youth visitors can also try their hand at creating one-of-a-kind treasures and hand made creations with projects lead by the Port of Los Angeles’s own, Crafted.

Of course a festival of this magnitude would not be compete without a large selection of fantastic fare. A bevy of local options will be on hand including L.A.’s regional food trucks, California wine tasting and for the beer lovers, a curated, full craft brew menu featuring the region’s best brewers. And sampling the regional eats is great because it will give visitors just enough energy to check out the other local, regional, and national crafters. These hand-made creations will feature a wide variety of crafts including maritime-themed artwork.

John Kraus and the Goers

John Kraus

There are some traditional songs from centuries past, some from just decades past and some John wrote all on his own. Nicely blended though, so distinguishing which is which may be a challenge. The traditional songs are anything but your grandfather’s shanties. The originals could have been sung on the deck of clipper ship in the mid 1800’s. And the whole album skips merrily along with similarities with the contemporary indie likes of Conner Oberst and M. Ward, without abandoning the original folkies like Stan Hugil and Ewan MacColl.

“It’s an eclectic, Lobscow Stew!” Probably the only band with guitar, drums, fiddle and tuba as the primary instruments, with a smattering of banjo, ukulele and sea salt for taste.

State of Grace

State-of-Grace

Los Angeles is the sound you should hear when you listen to State of Grace. Raised up from the streets of LA, State of Grace is a working class, bare-boned skin your knuckles kind of rock n roll band influenced by their surroundings.

Cutting their teeth as a unit the last two years by writing, recording and performing original music on any stage with electricity.

Priding themselves with having a little something for everybody. From hooks that will stay in your head to blistering Les Paul riffs that will keep you guessing to
a cannibalistic rhythm section that you cannot help but tap your foot to. They are a true mash up of all the rock n roll that exploded out of the speakers in the days of their youth.
Anything from AC/DC to U2 as well as The Rolling Stones to Def Leppard.

So after ever chord has been strummed and every drum has been bashed, they will say good night and hope you come back for more.

La Sirena Y Orquesta Mar de Ashé

La Sirena

People have asked us about our name, MAR DE ASHÉ (say it, Ah-SHAY). Well, Mar is ocean. And Ashé (spelled Aché in Cuba, or Axé in Brazil) is a word that came to us through the African Diaspora, that, roughly translated, means power, or life force, or blessings. It can even be used as an exclamation – Ashé! – the way we might exclaim Amen! – or, So Be It! – or even, Halleluiah! And a Sirena – that’s a Mermaid! So where else would a mermaid want to be but in a sea of blessings, power, and life force? And that’s what this band is – a powerful, vibrant blend of many nationalities and races, powerfully conveying messages of love, passion, and unity.

Led by vocalist, composer and arranger, La Sirena, Orquesta Mar de Ashé presents a delicious eclectic variety of danceable SALSA, Latin Jazz, Bachata, Merengue, Cumbia, Cha Cha Cha, Son, and Bolero.

Mar de Ashé boasts three vocalists, including not only the seductive siren songs of La Sirena, but also co-lead vocalist Oscar Daniel; creating a balance between male and female lead vocals, as well as sizzling harmonies and romantic duets. The orchestra includes three percussionists, covering timbales, congas, bongó, campana, güiro, güira, and tambora; piano; bass; and a smokin’ horn section consisting of two trumpets, trombone, and baritone sax, doubling on the alto.

With its unique vocal sound, big brass, and traditional Latin percussion, Mar de Ashé plays both covers and originals, giving you something at once traditional, and yet completely fresh and new – with its bilingual approach appealing to the full-spectrum audience.

The talented members of this 11-piece orchestra have played all over the globe for such diverse artists as Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Dizzy Gillespie, Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Luis Miguel, Eddie Santiago, Luis Enrique, Sonora Dinamita, Poncho Sanchez, Bobby Caldwell, Luther Vandross, Mel Torme, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown, to name only a few.
